As part of my Fulbright project, I was conducting music and film workshops with heroin addicts receiving care at the ASCMP Clinic in Tangier, Morocco. This clinic is the only one of its kind in the Northern Morocco and it was there I met the poet Mohammed and a singer named Hana and a rapper named Hamza. Before her addiction, Hana wanted to be a professional singer. Mohammed loves writing poems and Hamza, a Kanye West fan, loves rapping. On this particular workshop, I was not able to work with Hana due to a relapse. I have not seen her since. However I was able to work with Mohammed, Hamza, and Hicham on a new song.
The song was based on a poem written by Hamza form the ASCMP Clinic and we called it The Hyat, or The Life. It is about life in the streets how easily one can fall into fatal addictions.
Special thanks to Hicham and Hanan, and Hamza, who are three brilliant social workers who are leading efforts to care for the addicts at ASCMP Clinic.
